People seek change because they have a problem that interferes, in some way, with the course of their life. Having this problem acts to motivate the person to take action to modify or eliminate the problem.

Being a long established practice in clinical psychology, this service addresses a wide range of the emotional, behavioural and attitudinal problems. While the service is well geared to the treatment of many anxiety-related problems in adults, there is also a strong commitment to provide psychological services to assist with the emotional, behavioural and educational well-being of children.

Anxiety-related problems may be caused by one's environment (work or home), a traumatic experience, an injury or one's own personality. They result in a variety of unpleasant, disruptive and (sometimes) painful symptoms that can include ...

  • mood swings
  • irrational fears
  • depression
  • panic attacks
  • insomnia
  • headaches
  • muscle tension
  • stress
  • disturbed sleep
  • irrational behaviours
  • sexual dysfunction
  • disruptions to work and family relationships (including problems with child behaviour management)
  • pain and excessive shyness

Issues experienced mostly by children include ...

  • learning disorders
  • ADHD
  • giftedness
  • bedwetting

You will notice that these are issues that disrupt ordinary people's lives, and it is the ordinary person (experiencing extraordinary emotions and circumstances) that psychologists are best equipped to help.

A note about child behaviour management.

With regard to child behaviour management, it is important to keep in mind that there is a window of opportunity between the ages of about 2 to about 9 when you have the best opportunity to be successful using Behaviour Modification techniques. Once this opportunity has passed, Behavioural techniques (though still of some benefit) are likely to be of less value.
