Available specialist therapies

Cognitive Therapies... There are many variants of the Cognitive (i.e. relating to the way you think) approach to therapy. It works because there is a direct relationship between the way you think and the way you feel. Ed has developed a very efficient, skills-based, system for teaching you how to control that link.

The various Cognitive Therapies that Ed uses include:

  • Cognitive Therapy;
  • Cognitive Behaviour Therapy;
  • Systematic Desensitisation;
  • Gestalt Therapy; and
  • Exposure Therapy.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an odd-looking therapy, but it is generally very effective in the treatment of PTSD. It has recently been listed as a Best-Practice approach to the treatment of PTSD.

Hypnosis is not a therapy, but a means of delivering the required therapy. It is a very natural process that can enable you to achieve a relaxed and hyper-receptive mental state that is often very useful in enhancing the therapeutic process.

TRTP (The Richards Trauma Process) is a particularly effective use of a hypnotic approach to the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), abuse, grief, and several other psychological issues that are linked to difficulties in one's earlier life. It is comprised of a program of three structured long (about 90-minute) weekly sessions of hypnosis, followed by a normal-length counselling follow-up consultation approximately a month later. The first session treats unhelpful unconscious core beliefs and self-sabotage, the second session removes the emotional charge from the traumatic issues of the past, and the third session sets up a positive future. Psycho-Education is a straight-forward process of educating you about some aspect of a specific issue in order to help recruit your own problem-solving abilities. Sometimes, just knowing how your problem issue works (e.g. the effects of alcohol on brain functioning, the stress response, the difference between an ADHD brain and a regular brain, etc.) is the main thing you may need in order to improve your coping ability.

Supportive Psychotherapy, sometimes referred to as 'counselling', is particularly useful in the later (maintenance) phase of therapy.
